Elba is the principal island of the Tuscan Archipelago, a protected national park of some 600 sqkm, and lies right in its middle some 12 miles offshore from the mainland.

Elba has a rich history and was known in ancient times for its iron ore deposits. The Greek name Aethalia (fume) refers to the fumes from the furnaces used in metal production. Elba is probably best known as Napoleons exile where he spent 300 days in 1814 before escaping to return to France.

Elba has a well developed tourist industry; it has maintained its charm by strict building codes and all tourist accommodation fits unobtrusively into the landscape. The principal port is Portoferraio which was fortified in 1603 by King Philip II of Spain.
